The LaFayette City Council meeting Monday night was a tamer meeting than last month’s special called meeting over the situation at the cemetery.

In November, the city removed, by mistake, all flowers and other items from graves at LaFayette Cemetery.

At Monday’s meeting, council members and LaFayette mayor Neal Florence read newly proposed regulations for the city’s upkeep of the cemetery, as a few of the near 60 citizens that attended asked questions and received answers.

Florence thanked the 11-member committee, consisting of attendees from the special called meeting that worked with the city to formulate the new regulations for the city.

Florence said the city would hold three cleanups in the cemetery per year, which will take place in March, July and November.

Florence said, “This is a clean-up, not a clean-out.”

The council listened to the concerns of the citizens in attendance and said the new regulations will be posted in both entrances of the cemetery and that the city will do more to get the word out to avoid future confusions and mistakes.

Florence said the committee reached a decision on items placed on the gravesites and each plot is admitted one item to place on the plot, and the one who purchases the plot must apply for a free permit for the one item and that permit is good for 90 days.

Here are the new regulations:

• Flowers on headstones must be placed on top of headstone and/or sides in vases.

• Permitted permanent item is one item no taller than 24-inches.

• Ground cover: No trees are allowed at the gravesites, except those planted by the city. Sod (permitted) will be placed on all new graves and no gravel will be allowed on borders or fences.

• Benches must be placed at the foot of the grave facing the headstone and must be marble, metal, precast concrete or treated wood; no longer than 48-inches acceptable.

• Permits are free for special placements for special occasions and on a 90-day limit.

• Pets are not allowed, except for service animals (seeing eye dogs).

• Cleanup will be held by mid-March, mid-July and the first week in November for Veterans Day. Volunteer cleanups will be conducted by Boy Scouts or other groups. The storage building will be demolished and/or removed.
