A LaFayette council member was charged Wednesday with driving under the influence.

According to Gordy Wright, director of public information for the Georgia Department of Public Safety and a Georgia State Patrol spokesman:

The state patrol arrested William J. “Bill” Craig, 72, for DUI and improper lane change. The traffic stop was around 11 p.m. in Walker County on Ga. 1 Business.

Trooper Jason Geddie made the stop after observing a Chevrolet mini-van driving erratically. While talking with Craig, the trooper smelled alcohol and administered field sobriety tests.

After the test, Craig was arrested and taken to the Walker County jail for a breath test. Craig registered 0.12 grams percent and he was released to the county jail. Craig was cooperative throughout the traffic stop and testing process.

Craig could not be reached Thursday afternoon and Friday morning for comment.

Craig joined the City Council in January 2008. He isn’t a newcomer, having served on the council some years ago.

He has served in various administrative roles during his working career. He served as marketing director for the National Home Health Agency in seven states. He also served as administrator for North Georgia Health Agency in Fort Oglethorpe.

I think that the City Council meetings should begin with an AA meeting before the City Council meeting. Our City Council members bring shame to our city. All members should be removed. Maybe the First Baptist church should also be holding meetings for these guys that like to partake of the spirits and also do it in public.

Mr. Craig, what a great leader...you won't allow liquor by the drink in town, so you go to another town, get drunk and drive home. This isn't the first time is it? Mr Craig if you can't control yourself, what right do you have to control the city. You and your fellow council members are destroying the city bit by bit, but do you care? Not really huh? You still have your golf course and air port projects even if all the playgrounds and roads in town are destroyed and dug up and made into crap. You don't drive on those roads in Linwood. Do you even know where Linwood is? Do you know a single soul that lives there? Do you care? I don't think that you do as long as your beer is .25 cheaper per can out at your beloved golf course. It doesn't matter if you get in trouble any way, all of your cronies all probably have the same trouble, all of your peers, the rich white people in town that you are friends with will keep supporting you so you can stay in your position. You are all a bunch of hypocritical jokes.

There is finally some real news commentary in town, some real research done for LaFayette's interests...it makes sense and isn't new that is bought and paid for by those in charge for the most part...

I'm sorry he got caught drinking and driving .I am sure he will not do that anymore.I just think people have the wrong idea about drinking in this town. Most people think if you have one drink it's some kind of sin or your some kind of alcoholic. It's just like the song says " God is great, beer is good and people are crazy."

Craig made motion to lower the price of beer at the golf course from $2.25 per can to $2.00 per can. Councilman Tallent seconded the motion. Motion carried 3-2.

Geeeeeesshshhhhh !!

I believe Mr. Craig should be held responsible for his actions, and if justice is served this man's political career is over, not to mention the embarrassment he will have to deal with as a drunk driver. That is why I hate to see such comments being posted, where all these individuals care about is how this will affect their ability to obtain alcohol by the drink in LaFayette. I would like to see others let it go. Mr. Craig has a lot to think about and a lot to deal with in the future, lets not kick someone while they are down. I believe the appropriate response, if you are a Christian, is to pray for those that are leaders, as the Bible instructs, and regardless of Mr. Craigs beliefs, or anyone elses, I will hold to mine and pray for him.

This figures. This is only going to be used to make sure LaFayette never gets a chance to get liquor by the drink passed in town. Nice job.Shoot yourself in the other foot next time.

Oh, fantastic. Isn't this one of the guys who set up the beer and wine vote to fail? Are we the pot or the kettle today.
