Fort Oglethorpe mayor Ronnie Cobb tells citizens to be patient while waiting for the official announcement about “Project Hilltop.”

He said so far there is no signed contract with the company, rumored to be Costco. Officials are still under a strict confidentiality agreement and cannot make an official announcement yet.

The Fort Oglethorpe City Council, at a special meeting this morning approved the abandonment of the right-of-way road between Scruggs and Cloud Springs roads, the site for Project Hilltop.

Cobb said steps like these keep coming up in final steps of the process.

“There’s a lot of things that have to happen,” Cobb said.

He said many of the details were approved a year ago, and because of changes later on, they have to be looked at again.

“It’s out of our hands at this point, and in the hands of the attorneys,” he said, adding that they talk over confer-ence calls throughout the day.

“I may get very positive news this morning or another challenge,” he added.

The mayor said the May 1 deadline for have the land cleared for construction may have to be moved back, but the fact that the deadlines are changing means that the deal is still progressing instead of dying out.
