Fort Oglethorpe mayor Ronnie Cobb says the construction company is working to get the site where Costco Wholesales wants to build ready by May 10.
The new deadline will give Costco more time to get the store open in August.
The original contract with Costco gives a deadline of May 24, and the store will take about 110 days to build, which means an opening date in September.
The mayor said no formal change has been made to the contract, but Costco officials are hoping to get to work more quickly.

At the March 8 Fort Oglethorpe City Council meeting, Cobb said Wright Brothers had already cut down about 40 feet of the hill in the past couple of weeks.
“They’ve got equipment in there to move mountains and that’s what they’re doing,” Cobb said.
They are working seven days a week now.
Wright Brothers has a good head start, Cobb said, because they had their equipment on site a month before they actually began working.
Cobb said one factor to consider is work days lost to rainy weather, but the company is working as quickly as possible.
Cobb advises motorists to avoid the area when possible, due to the added traffic of the big trucks and equipment.
He said Wright Brothers has already begun blasting the area. When the company gets close to the road, Scruggs Road will have to be closed for a few minutes to protect drivers from debris.
