Jerry Kalina, 87, LaFayette

Jerry Kalina of LaFayette died April, 22, 2010, after a brief fight with pancreatic cancer. He was 87.

Survivors include his daughter, Debora Kalina-Benedict, and his grandson, John Kalina.

What is the measure of a man? Is it as an attentive husband, a caring father, a doting grandfather, an inventive engineer, loyal friend or socially conscience citizen? No matter, because Jerry Kalina exceeded in all aspects of his life.

Born on a farm in Prague, Jerry was raised by his grandparents and he learned to be an amazing cook from his blind grandmother. He may have opened his own restaurant, one of his dreams, if Hitler had never invaded his country. Jerry, always passionate, immediately became involved in the local resistance. When he met his future wife, Eleonora, they jointly worked for the freedom of their country. After they were sent to a labor camp for a brief period, it became impossible to stay so they left friends and family, never to see them again.

Arriving in the United States without any help from family was not easy; however, the friends they met became their family. They never forgot the kindness they were shown and they turned around and sponsored many families who immigrated to the United States. Jerry and Eleonora never forgot their friends; their extensive Christmas card list is only one indication of the extended family they loved. Jerry especially liked socializing by playing chess and bridge and being a member of a small investment group.

He was always happiest working with machines. On Saturdays he would proudly take his daughter to his factories to teach her about all the machines which made paper and plastic cups. Working for different companies had the family change homes periodically: Chicago, Ohio, New York, Easton, Md., and LaFayette. He would never say which city was his favorite; he loved them all. He always saw the best in any village; he especially loved the people and participated in the local Elks program. Somehow, Jerry always ended up in charge of the local swimming pool!

After a long career as a mechanical engineer and inventor Jerry retired to Camano Island, Wash., at the age of 72. He pursued two of his favorite hobbies: cooking and playing bridge. After Eleonora, his wife of 64 years, died in 2007, he moved in with his daughter in 2009. You may contact the family by sending a card to 24009 107th Dr. S.E., Woodinville, Wash., 98077.
