COMMUNITY · The Chattanooga History Center will present a Gallery Talks lecture at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug.7. COMMUNITY · The YMCA Summer Food Program has started up in a new location at LaFayette Municipal Park, at LaFayette Recreation (Department), 638 South Main Street in LaFayette. Children will be served free lunches from noon-1 p.m. at the picnic tables and pavilion next to the gym entrance. The program will continue now through August. Each year the U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like North Georgia Community YMCA to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. COMMUNITY · The 2012 Lake Winnie Youth Talent Search is the chance for guests younger than 18 to take the Jukebox Junction stage and showcase their performing arts talent. The contest consists of three preliminary rounds on Sunday, Aug. 5, 12 and 19, at 5 p.m., and a triumphant final round on Sunday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. The top acts from the two preliminary rounds will compete in the finals for a grand prize, which includes $500 and the opportunity to open for Confederate Railroad on Sept. 2. COMMUNITY · Junior golfers up to age 18 are invited to attend summer golf camps at the LaFayette Golf Course. The camps will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. each day at a cost of $60 per camp. Tuesdays will include work on the driving range, Wednesdays will be spent on the practice greens, and Thursdays will be reserved for on course work. The camps will be directed and taught by Eddie Jackson, a former PGA Tour player who has spent the past 27 years as a teaching professional. COMMUNITY · The Friends of the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library will meet at 6:45 p.m. sharp, Thursday, Aug. 9, at the interim library building (old Food Lion on Main Street) in LaFayette. The “Christmas in August” fundraiser, scheduled for Aug. 30, will be discussed. Tickets for this event go on sale on Aug. 13, at One-Eleven restaurant, the Bank of LaFayette and the library. The library has suffered drastic funding cuts this year.
