Howard William Turner, 97, Chattanooga/Lakeland, Fla.
Howard William Turner, longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and lately of Lakeland, Fla. died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, in Lakeland. He was 97.
Mr. Turner was born to Ida and Charles E. Turner on April 19, 1914, in Rockwell City, Iowa. His father’s family had settled in Iowa after having moved west from Illinois, and his mother’s north from Kentucky, in the 19th century. Howard was the second of two sons in a family including his brother, Ivan, and four sisters, Dorothy, Ruby, Faye, and Inez, all of whom, excepting Inez, predeceased him.
He grew up during the Great Depression in southwest Iowa, where he met and married Estella Hiatt, in 1934. He and Estella had four children, Helen T. Jackson and Rita T. Doolittle of Lakeland, Fla., Howard E. Turner of Atlanta and Glenn C. Turner of Moorestown, N.J., and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Howard and Estella moved south to Chattanooga in 1940, later living in Oak Ridge and Memphis, Tenn., Little Rock, Ark. and Ft. Campbell, Ky., as Howard, who became a builder, was employed on a number of large government pre-war construction projects.
Leaving a protected position at Oak Ridge, he settled his family of three young children in Iowa and joined the Marine Corps in 1943, serving in the Pacific throughout World War II. This parting from his young family was painful, but “I guess I was patriotic,” he said of this decision which, it should be added, did not greatly differ from that made by many of his fellow countrymen. Whatever Howard did in his life, he did well, so it was not surprising that he achieved the highest score in marksmanship in his Marine and was awarded the Marines’ expert marksman medal. As a seagoing Marine, he served on an attack transport, the USS General Hase, sailing the length and breadth of the wartime Pacific transporting troops to, among others, Eniwetok, Guadalcanal, Manus Island, New Guinea and Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. In the South Pacific in 1944, his ship narrowly avoided sinking when two Japanese torpedoes missed the Hase by only a few feet.
After World War II, Howard rejoined his family and again moved south, residing at various times in Mobile and New Orleans before settling permanently in the Chattanooga area. There he saw all his children grown and become successful professionals. As a builder, over the course of his career he was employed in the construction of many commercial buildings, TVA dams, and residences around the southeast, including supervising the initial construction phase of Miller Park downtown Chattanooga. A superb craftsman with a natural building and engineering talent, he was adept in the use of a transit level in laying out new structures and sufficiently excellent at mathematics and spatial relationships such that he could invariably compute the proper angle and fit of materials and direct their preparation without ever having to approach the building being constructed to check his calculations.
His greatest joy was his family, with whom he shared his many years. His was a good life and a devoutly religious one. He was a longtime member of the Rossville Nazarene Church where he, with others, was instrumental in erecting the current sanctuary and served in various offices, including Sunday school superintendant. Estella, his wife of some 60 years, died of cancer in 2002 and thereafter, he lived largely with his eldest daughter, Helen, until his passing.
