Dear editor,

This letter is in response to the article, “NARCONON helps student after 23 years of addiction.” After reading this article, I was not certain if I was looking at a paid advertisement for a treatment center, a listing for self-help group or a school. As I continued to read the article, a question came to mind: what exactly is Narconon? The article professes to be an interview with someone with an addiction problem who is allegedly a Narconon of Georgia “student.” It didn’t really read like an interview but more like his personal story. I hope he was not under the illusion that his story would be held in confidence.

The first thing that I discovered was that although the name itself is strikingly similar to other self-help or 12-step groups, and possibly purposely so, it is nothing of the kind. Narconon is a controversial international drug rehab program based on the philosophy and theories on drug addiction of L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer and founder of the Church of Scientology. These theories appear to be ignorant of basic medical facts. Narconon’s ties to scientology are not readily available or disclosed to its clients who are making a decision on treatment for drug addiction at a vulnerable time in their lives. However, scientologists are employed by the centers and its doctrines and organization are similar to scientology.

Many critics claim that Narconon is simply a front group for scientology with the purpose of making money and recruiting new members for scientology. Although Narconon is officially a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit organization there have been reports of heavy monthly fees for their clients. I don't know what half of what you all are arguing about, but that Enguerrand sounds scary. Is Enguerrand how scientologists behave?

Nowhere on that blog before I exposed them did they reveal that it was directly connected to NARCONON/$cientology. See they lie. This website was made for the purpose of providing false and biased information so that people seeking help would find their way to NARCONON. NARCONON is a dangerous and expensive scam. Keep away from these scam artists.

NARCONON is not a drug rehab it is a expensive recruitment front for $cientology. Also $cientology is not a religion it is a greedy, and dangerous corporate cult. They will steal your money, and then they'll destroy your life.

Not speaking about Narconon? Narconon IS a branch of Scientology. The branch should fall with the rest of the tree.

Why else does it cost so much? Why is it so much more expensive than other, more successful, options? The venom spewed by Enguerrand is repetitive and concerning. People who behave in this manner would not seem to be well-suited to provide assistance to those with addiction problems.

Narconon is certainly not the only option for those who seek help for drug addiction. Many have found help through other programs.

The mask is a symbol, nothing more, of defiance against the harassment of the Scientology cult. Sceintology begs the protesters to remove the masks, and frequently takes their critics' pictures.

then they launch some sort of information gathering investigation against the person. They believe the ONLY reason someone opposes Scientology is to hide their own crimes. And, of course, that we're on on psychotic medications.

Enguerrand, I am not part of this anonymous group you're talking about, but based on what I have seen from you, if the other people you mention are, I think I would rather be a part of their group than yours. For the most part they seem well educated, and well spoken, where you have posted the same thing over and over, ranted like a loon, and made unprovoked personal attacks on them. If you have any proof these people have engaged in any terroristic activity, report them to the proper authorities. If you are an example of the type of person Narconon and Scientology produce, no wonder they wear masks! I wouldn't want people like you knowing who I was either. You seem to lack self control.
