The Sharrock family episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will air Sunday at 8 p.m. on Chattanooga station WTVC NewsChannel9.

In February, Catoosa County’s Lakeview neighborhood was abuzz with a frantic but happy week-long invasion from the crew of the popular ABC-TV series.

Utilizing an army of local volunteers, they came to replace the home of Michael and Cindy Sharrock, whose son Patrick has osteogenesis imperfecta, a rare genetic disorder commonly known as brittle bone disease. The family’s old house at 179 Monanaw Ave. was unsafe for Patrick, whose condition causes his bones to fracture very easily.

For most Chattanooga-area viewers, Sunday’s broadcast will be the first viewing of the new home’s interior, and if it is up to the usual “Makeover” standards, it’s likely to be spectacular.

The show will feature the start-to-finish process of tearing down the Sharrock family’s old house and constructing a new 3,000-square-foot home and surrounding landscape.

A clue to some of what may be revealed is a superhero theme during the recording of the project. Patrick is an avid comic collector who said his favorite superhero is Batman.

And there is at least some “Lord Of The Rings”-themed design present, as some local crafters fashioned a Hobbit-style playhouse for the backyard.

An “Extreme Viewing Party” will be held at Metro Tab, off Tenn. 153 at Airport Road exit 1A, on Sunday, May 15, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. and admission and parking are free. Seating is general admission and snack foods and drinks will be available for purchase. Behind the scenes DVDs and photo CDs will also be available for purchase to benefit the OI Foundation and Alhambra Shriners.

During the blitz of the construction crew and design team to complete a house in 106 hours, the Sharrocks traveled to Hollywood to visit one of Patrick’s heroes, Atticus Shaffer, a young actor with brittle bone disease who stars on the ABC-TV comedy “The Middle.”

The other side of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will reveal some of the past struggles that Michael and Cindy have coped with regarding their son’s condition and how the show motivates the local community to participate in the benefit.

Sunday’s episode will be the finale for the series’ eighth season.

Project builder Vision Homes and the Big Hearts team, which helped coordinate the massive event, are planning an “Extreme Viewing Party” for the public, according to Beth Johnson of KMT Creative Group.

The event will be held at Metro Tab in Chattanooga and will feature music, special guests, and presentations prior to the episode beginning at 8 p.m.

The builders and family will be in attendance and encourage all those who volunteered or followed the progress to join in the celebration.

While the event is free, a variety of organizations that will be accepting donations, including “Hope and Help International” with a trailer to collect items to aid in tornado disaster relief for the area.

May 9-15 is Osteogenesis Imperfecta Awareness Week, and representatives from the OI Foundation will be at the event with information about osteogenesis imperfecta. OI wristbands will be sold for $3 each.

“The team is thrilled to have the foundation present to cap off this exciting week,” Johnson said.
