Former Ringgold mayor George Rhinehart was taken to Memorial hospital in Chattanooga this morning after being struck by a vehicle along U.S. 41 in Ringgold.

According to the Ringgold Police Department:

The 82-year-old Rhinehart was struck by a juvenile driver traveling in an SUV while he attempted to cross U.S. 41 near the Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership near downtown Ringgold.

According to Ringgold police Capt. Greg Wingo, Rhinehart was helping with the city’s Festival of Flags at the time he was hit.

“Mr. Rhinehart was helping put up flag poles around town, when he was hit by a juvenile driver while crossing Nashville Street,” Wingo said. “He suffered a possible broken arm, possible rib injuries, and was taken to Memorial Hospital.”

Rhinehart, a Ringgold resident, served as the city’s mayor from 1970-71.
