LaFayette will test-drive a once-weekly garbage pickup for its citizens during May.

As a cost-cutting measure, the city council voted Monday, April 9, to move forward with a monthly trial period during which city residents would receive only one weekly pickup instead of the accustomed two.

Beginning the week of Monday, April 30, and lasting for four weeks, residents who normally receive pickups on Mondays and Thursdays will be serviced on Thursdays only; those with Tuesday and Friday pickups will have their garbage collected on Tuesdays only.

The city hopes the trial period will help them evaluate any cost-saving benefits of a once-weekly pickup, includ-ing savings on gas and labor, as well as decreased wear and tear on the city streets and the garbage truck itself.

Should the trial month run smoothly and without citizen complaints, it is likely that the city council will vote to make the change permanent.

Collection charges for garbage pickup by the city will remain the same.
