The Georgia Northwestern Bobcats recently went to the land of the Phoenix to sign a pair of basketball players from Sonoraville High School.

Six-foot-three slasher Tre-Vaughn Bostic and 6-foot point guard Tavish Reynolds are now officially members of the Bobcats as part of a 10-player recruiting class brought in by GNTC head coach David Stephenson.

Bostic graduated from Sonoraville as the school’s all-time leading rebounder. A double-double at home last season against LaFayette highlighted the forward’s career as he cleaned the Phoenix nets for 27 points and pulled down 13 boards in the win.

“Sonoraville has been home to me,” said Bostic. “Coach Stephenson really seems to have my best interests in mind. He cares about the game. But he seems to care more about what happens to me in college and my future.”

Reynolds, the leading scorer for the Phoenix last season, will come to GNTC with plenty of references in hand. Buzzer-beaters this season against Adairsville and Chattooga stand at the top of his credentials as he heads into a dog fight for the Bobcats point guard slot in the 2012-13 campaign.

With Georgia Northwestern’s first-ever All-American, Matt Woods, moving on to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the point guard position is wide open to all comers.

“With Matt gone, I really think Tavish has a great shot at that spot,” said Stephenson. “As for Tre-Vaughn, we are hoping to take a lot of his athleticism and speed and turn him into a slasher of sorts for this team. I really like what Coach (Brent) Mashburn is doing here and hope this is just the beginning of a pipeline of student-athletes from Sonoraville to Georgia Northwestern.”

“They are both great young men that do what they are supposed to on and off the court,” said Mashburn, whose team finished 10-16 in Region 7-AA last season. “They really meant a lot to this team.”

Open team workout dates for the men’s and women’s GNTC basketball teams will be posted at GNTC.edu as they are available. Tryout dates will be posted this summer for spots on the 2012-13 GNTC rosters. Next season will mark the sixth year of student-athletics at Georgia Northwestern.

GNTC competes in NJCAA’s Region XVII in men’s and women’s varsity basketball. The Bobcats hung conference championship banners in 2008 and 2009 while the Lady Bobcats are the NJCAA Region XVII’s defending champions, advancing the National Sweet 16 in post-season play in 2012.

The Bobcats open their season on Nov. 2 at home at the Rossville Athletic Center against visiting Toccoa Falls College. The very next weekend, GNTC will pack their bags for the Music City as they return to the Freewill Classic at Freewill Baptist in Nashville, Tenn. The Bobcats advanced to the semifinals of the tourney just one year ago.
