The burglar did not receive life-threatening injuries.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident, which took place at Gateway Antique Mall off Cloud Springs Road.
Police chief David Eubanks said the shooting occurred at about 11 p.m. when officers came across a burglary in progress.
“The building was surrounded and an effort to apprehend the suspect was made,” Eubanks said. “He fled the building and encountered other officers. During the confrontation, the suspect was shot by police and received non-life-threatening injuries.”
The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
A source close to the investigation said the suspect was shot in the leg after officers saw him reaching for what they believed to be a gun and that he traveled to the location in a rental car.
The police report from the incident has not been released as the GBI continues its investigation of the case, which is standard protocol with any officer-involved shooting.
