“Canine Parvovirus (parvo) is a highly contagious viral disease that is one of the most common causes of diarrhea in dogs under 6 months of age. It first appeared in the late 1970s, and is now one of the most common serious dog disease problems encountered in animal shelters, replacing distemper for that distinction,” according to aspcapro.org.
The shelter initiated the quarantine this week after residents notified the shelter that an animal they had recently adopted from the shelter had died. County administrator David Ashburn said the shelter is undergoing a thorough cleaning of its facility and has set aside a restricted area to receive vicious animals brought in by animal control.
Ashburn said shelter staff is watching for any further signs of the disease. He added animals are being kept in indoor kennels due to the extreme heat.
