COMMUNITY · Teens are invited to the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, for the program Steampunk Creations. Teens will use gears, hardware and old clock parts to create crazy steampunk sculptures and jewelry. Supplies will be provided.

ENTERTAINMENT · The Rossville Public Library presents a family movie day at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, with a family adventure movie.

ENTERTAINMENT · Patriotism at The Post hosted by the 6th Cavalry Museum will be held. Enjoy a Tabernacle Big Band concert and fireworks on the polo field on Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe. Admission is free, parking costs $5 per car. Pepsi is sponsoring the annual event.

EDUCATION · The Walker County Public School System offices will be closed July 2-13.

COMMUNITY · Adult sand volleyball will be held Monday, Tuesday or Thursday evenings, now through July 30, at the Gilbert Stephenson Park tennis courts in Fort Oglethorpe. Cost is $150 per team. Visit ymcachattanooga.org for more information.

COMMUNITY · A breastfeeding class will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at Erlanger East (Gunbarrel Road). This class is designed to help participants make an informed choice about breastfeeding. Learn breastfeeding basics, what to expect the first few weeks and special tips for success. Concerns about returning to work or school will also be discussed. This course is coordinated by a board-certified lactation consultant. Registration fee is $30. COMMUNITY · Junior golfers up to age 18 are invited to attend summer golf camps at the LaFayette Golf Course. The camps will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9-11 a.m. each day at a cost of $60 per camp. Tuesdays will include work on the driving range, Wednesdays will be spent on the practice greens, and Thursdays will be reserved for on course work. The camps will be directed and taught by Eddie Jackson, a former PGA Tour player who has spent the past 27 years as a teaching professional. COMMUNITY · An antique typewriter exhibit is ongoing at Chattooga Academy in LaFayette. The exhibit features Royal, Underwood and Smith typewriters, as well as Imperial and Smith-Corona typewriters. An Oliver No. 9 is also on display. The typewriters were manufactured approximately from between 1915-1950. A volunteer will be on-hand to assist visitors with the exhibit on Sundays from 1-3 p.m. Chattooga Academy is open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. most days Monday through Friday. The building is at 304 North Main Street, in LaFayette. Admission is free. The exhibit will run through Sunday, July 22. For more information, call 706-639-1519.

COMMUNITY · “Serving up Summer” summer food program runs through Friday, Aug. 24. Lunch for children ages infant-17 will be served from noon-1 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at LaFayette 1st United Methodist Church, 301 South Main Street; and from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at Second Baptist Church, 500 West Main Street in LaFayette; and from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Friday at the LaFayette Housing Authority, 300 Oak Street. The program is sponsored by North Georgia YMCA and the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and is funded througha USDA grant.

Wednesday, July 4, Independence Day

COMMUNITY · Hinkle Park will hold an Independence Day barbecue from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, at Hinkle Community Center. Enjoy outdoor games like Bocce ball and croquet, and indoor games like foosball and air hockey. Plates of beef or pork, coleslaw, baked beans and desserts cost $7. The event will benefit the community center. COMMUNITY · Walker County Emergency Services will offer a free fire extinguisher training class for ages 18 and up from 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 5. The class will be held at Fire Station #1 in Rock Spring, in front of Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Pre-registration is required to ensure adequate course materials.
