Jerry Scott, special agent with the GBI office in Rossville, said his office expects to receive toxicology reports from John C. Coates’ autopsy in three or four weeks.

Coats was shot and killed during a confrontation with police in Fort Oglethorpe in June.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of Chik-fil-A on Battlefield Parkway after two officers pulled over Coates in an attempt to serve a warrant.

The suspect refused to cooperate and shots were fired. Coates died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The GBI is in charge of investigating the incident.

Scott said the GBI, after receiving toxicology reports, must complete more paperwork and submit its findings to district attorney Herbert “Buzz” Franklin.

Scott said the GBI would then close the investigation if the shooting appears to be a “justifiable situation.”
