The smell of clean, fresh park air and roasting hotdogs will fill the air Monday at Gilbert Stephenson Park as the City of Fort Oglethorpe launches a campaign to clean up the city.

“Get it to the Curb” is the theme for the entire month of May in efforts to raise awareness of the trash and yard waste pickup services offered for residents of the city.

Fort Oglethorpe residents can visit the park from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. to learn about efforts to clean up the city and enjoy refreshments sponsored by the city, Coca-Cola and Wal-Mart.

“The city picks up this stuff up all the time, (this is) more or less a PR campaign to make sure that people know that this service is offered all the time,” said Jill Lacy, Fort Oglethorpe Codes Enforcement official. “It’s to let people know who don’t know or don’t use it. (The city picks up) household garbage twice a week, but this is above and beyond that.”

Have you ever looked around your house or yard? Do you groan as you see all the trash and junk that has been laying around for the past month, six months, or six years? If you don’t want/need it anymore, then “Get it to the Curb.”

A great way to begin all your spring cleaning is to take advantage of extensive pickup services the city offers for trash, brush, and unused items. The first and third week of every month is brush pickup, and the second and fourth week is trash pickup.

Just set your extra garbage on the curb in the morning, and by the end of the day it will be in the Walker County Landfill and out of your home.

There are a few limitations. The city cannot pickup paint, batteries, pesticides or other hazardous materials. Rocks, dirt, construction debris and trees larger than six inches in diameter cannot be accepted. Tire pickup is limited to six.

The service is provided to residents only and excludes businesses, contractors and developers.
