If he was an astronaut, Chickamauga resident Bobby Elrod could have made 8.4 trips to the moon and back. But Elrod is a trucker who achieved four million accident free miles for Roadway. He was honored with a special event and catered meal at the Roadway Terminal in Catoosa County Jan. 29 with a large gathering of well wishers from around the Southeast who braved below freezing temperatures to congratulate the stalwart of the road outside at the terminal. The honoree received a police escort to the event where fellow workers, union officials, former supervisors and current company brass gave him a much-deserved pat on the back.

He received a plaque and a variety of other special commemorative gifts in honor of his milestone. His truck cab will now have the number “4” painted on its side replacing the “3” it currently sports. According to Roadway officials, Elrod is one of six active truckers nationwide who have reached such a pinnacle of success in driving. “I couldn’t have done this by myself,” he said. “I thank the Lord, and my wife ….” He continued sharing the thanks with a number of his fellow Roadway workers.

As his wife Martha holds a bouquet of flowers presented her, Elrod (center) accepts a plaque signifying his four million miles of accident free driving from Roadway facility manager Jackie Carter. (Catoosa News/Randall Franks)
