With the streetscaping project for LaFayette Road no longer moving forward, Fort Oglethorpe council members are working on transferring funds from the streetscaping project to making a trail from Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School to Barnhardt Circle.

The streetscaping project was terminated due to lack of funds, as well as lack of support from property owners along the road.

“We just didn’t have the funding,” public works and recreation department director Jeff Long said.

When the state did not give an expected half-million dollars to the project, the federal funds of $350,000 were not enough to complete it.

At the Monday, April 27, meeting, council members unanimously approved $29,900 toward redesigning the project.

Once the project receives state approval, it will move into the construction phase.

When the project is completed, a trail will be built along Harked Road from Frank Gleason Park to Barnhardt Circle, which will receive new sidewalks along the perimeter of Barnhardt Circle.
