Nathaniel Womble says he wants "to dispel any notion in anybody's mind that (his actions constitute) a personal vendetta against Walker school chief Truman Atkins." Any issue that deals with freedom isn't a trivial one, said Womble, the organizer of a movement to oust Atkins, at a press conference Monday in Fort Oglethorpe. Womble said his "main objective" in holding the press conference is to tell people who signed the petition to expel Atkins they should not fear Atkins will sue them. Womble said he would like the superintendent to resign and the position to be made an elected, rather than appointed, one. Womble, a constitutional rights advocate, on Monday also called for the repeal of a state code that exempts all educators from liability if they injure a child while administering corporal punishment. Womble showed photos of raised, red bruises on the buttocks of a LaFayette High School student who was paddled in October. He wants the Walker Board of Education to call for Principal Jon Pike's resignation as "perpetrator of this abuse," he said.
