A Chickamauga woman was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 7, for her alleged involvement in a conspiracy to murder a South Carolina woman.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation believes Virginia Pearl Lackey, 66, of 303 Longwood St., worked with several individuals to hire someone in Marshall County, Alabama, to murder a South Carolina woman, FBI spokesman Craig Dahle said.

Authorities believe Lackey was prompted by her sister’s husband’s alleged affair with the intended victim.

“The allegation is (Morris’) husband was having an affair with an individual in South Carolina, and that was the motivation,” Dahle said. “The husband had no knowledge of any of this, so he is not part of this in any way, shape or form, and I’m not aware of whether he was a target or not.”

Lackey’s sister, Alma Elizabeth Morris, 53, of North Charleston, S.C., contacted Lackey to initiate the conspiracy, Dahle said. They contacted Ringgold resident Jerry Wayne Cargle. Cargle contacted an Alabama man who cooperated with authorities. Law enforcement officials are tracking down the rest of the conspirators.

Lackey was arraigned in federal court in Rome Thursday, and awaits a bond hearing in Birmingham, Ala., FBI senior supervisory resident agent James McJunkin said. She faces federal charges of conspiracy and use of interstate commerce with intent that a murder be committed. The FBI issued a warrant for Cargle’s arrest with the same charges.

Cargle, 50, stands about 6-foot-5 and weighs approximately 400 pounds. He has hazel eyes and tattoos all over his body. Anyone with information concerning Cargle’s whereabouts should contact McJunkin at (706) 866-2525
