UPDATED with funeral arrangements ... Authorities say charges are pending in connection with the accident this week in which a Chickamauga boy was killed.

According to Georgia State Patrol Post 41 in LaFayette:

Johnny Owen of 110 Oak Trail, Chickamauga, lost control of the 1998 Ford Expedition he was driving on Johnson Road in a curve and drifted over the center line.

When he overcorrected, his 9-year-old son, Joshua Luke Owen, was ejected from the vehicle. The victim was not wearing a seatbelt.

The one-vehicle accident occured Aug. 27 about 9 p.m. about two miles north of Chickamauga, near Cherokee Ridge Elementary School.

Mr. Owen told authorities he thought his son and two daughters had buckled up. His daughters were wearing their seatbelts.

No one else injured in the accident.

Investigators have found no evidence to indicate excessive speed was a factor. Investigators await the results of blood tests to determine whether alcohol or drugs could have played a role in the accident; however, preliminary evidence does not point to that end.

Investigators noted rain had begun to fall when the accident occured.

The victim was a fourth-grade student at Stone Creek Elementary and was of the Baptist faith. He was a football player for the 9 and 10-year-old Rossville Bulldogs.

He is survived by his parents, Johnny and Tammi Owen, and three sisters.

Funeral arrangements for Joshua Luke Owen are being handled by W.L. Wilson and Sons Funeral Home in Fort Oglethorpe. Services: Saturday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. David Thompson officiating. Burial: Chickamauga Cemetery. Visitation: After 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, and Saturday morning, Aug. 30, prior to the service at the funeral home
