The North Georgia Football DreamTeam selected by the Catoosa County News, Walker County Messenger, and FOTV-42 Sports staff will be honored Saturday, January 12 at 2 p.m. at the Golden Corral Steak House in Fort Oglethorpe.

“Golden Corral owner Jerry Terrette is a huge booster of sports and has been one of the area’s most valuable players by hosting these type banquets for more than 15 years,”

FOTV-42 Sports Director Stump Martin said. “We’re very happy to work with the Catoosa County News and Walker County Messenger to help recognize the area high school stars with our Dream Team program. We look for a large crowd of school backers and families and friends of the players at the event.”

The North Georgia Dream Team 2001 gala is sponsored by Hutcheson Medical Center and the Golden Corral and will be rebroadcast on all-digital FOTV-42 on Comcast Cable in Walker and Catoosa County on Thursday Jan. 15, and Sunday Jan. 18 at 10 p.m.

“This completes another year of exciting high school football on FOTV-42,” station General Manager Bryan Perry said. “We appreciate the athletes and our sports staff who help make our sports the clear choice for the North Georgia viewers. We hear each day how much the viewers enjoy the Saturday morning tape-delay high school football games that have been a tremendous success for more than 16 years.”

Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe leads the 29-man glitter squad with 11 players off of the Warriors 8-3 state playoff team.

Ten of the 11 Warriors selected were starters on the outstanding LFO defensive unit with most playing both ways.

“People need to realize what Coach John Allen has accomplished in a short stay at LFO,” Martin said. “He again was selected the Lynn Murdock Coach of the Year. In two years against rivals from Walker and Catoosa County he owns an impressive 7-1 record. That’s what you call bragging rights.”

Returning award winners from last year’s Dream Team are 2000 Nelson Bowers Citizenship Award winner J.D. Davis of LFO and 2000 Bobby Scott Offensive Player of the Year Award winner Tony Bellew of Ringgold. Other returners from the 2000 Dream Team are Ringgold lineman Zach Peters, Gordon Lee lineman Zack Eubanks and big LaFayette lineman Dakota Jones.

“You don’t have to look far to find football on the uprise in this area,” said Martin. “This is a talented group of athletes who have worked hard to turn high school football around in our neighborhood. Coach Allen led LFO into the playoffs in his second year, and Coach Lamar Brown had his Ringgold Tigers knocking on the playoff door in 7-AAAA. Greg Ellis had his Trojans in the playoffs the past two years at Gordon Lee, and LaFayette and Ridgeland programs are improving.”

Ringgold had seven Tigers to make the Dream Team, followed by LaFayette and Gordon Lee with four each, and Ridgeland had three.

The Player of the Year, and players of the year on offense and defense will be presented at the event. Plus awards will be presented for citizenship and sportsmanship.

The Golden Corral will be feeding the Dream Team and area head coaches at the all-you-can eat food bar and guests are welcome.
