This is a week of trivia. I want to see how many of you remember “Angels of Mercy,” a song written in 1942 by Irving Berlin to commemorate the Red Cross in World War II. The Red Cross is still as active as ever today.
Remember Gene Autry? The Hollywood actor known as the singing cowboy? He was a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. He flew C-47’s in the China-India theater for the Air Transport Command. Autry was discharged in Sept. 1945.
Do you remember who won the WWII years’ baseball World Series Games? In 1941 the New York Yankees defeated the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1942 the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees. In 1943 the New York Yankees defeated the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1944 the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the St. Louis Browns. Finally, in 1945 the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago Cubs. How many of these did you remember?
I have a brain teaser for next week. In what branch of service did New York Yankees baseball player, Lawrence “Yogi” Berra enlist? I will give you the answer next week.
These facts were taken from the book, “World War II Strange and Fascinating Facts.”
I recommend the following movie, “Band of Brothers,” which is an HBO movie. This movie is a ten-part series on DVD with several hours of viewing time. The movie takes you from Currahee, Day of Days, Carentan, Replacements, Crossroads, Bastogne, The Breaking Point, The last Patrol, Why We Fight, and Points.
Do you have a favorite movie that you would like to tell us about that takes place during wartime? Send the information to my email, and I will share it with our readers.
Do you remember a song that was played during your military days? I can remember the song “Sugar Shack” while I was at Ft. Jackson, S.C., in 1963. The song was being played at the PX. I would like to hear about your favorite song. It does not have to be in war times past; it can be recent war times.
