A LaFayette neighborhood was evacuated for more than four hours Monday night after a man threatening suicide went into nearby woods and fired a gun.

Walker County sheriff Steve Wilson confirmed that the man is a former Sheriff’s Office employee.

According to Wilson:

Authorities were notified about 7:30 p.m. Monday that a man living on Flatstone Drive, off Bell Road, in LaFayette was threatening suicide. He went into woods behind his residence with a gun and fired a shot either into the air or into the ground.

Authorities talked to him for several hours before he came out of the woods. He was taken to Hutchison Medical Center for mental evaluation.

During the ordeal neighborhood residences were evacuated for safety.

No charges have been filed.

“Someone had an emotional episode,” Wilson said. “Our ultimate goal is to resolve it, without anyone being injured.”

That's how rumors get started because "we hear"before u choose to add to the many lies out there know the truth. And as far as his wife she is a victim as well. Praying for the family as well as anyone involved

I think the man is crazy and also I think he is doing this to get disability. Also I hear the man is home so how do people in that neighborhood feel about coming out of their house or letting their children play outside. And maybe just by reading these posts his wife drove him to do this!

There really is no story here. The shot was never fired while policeman were present and they were never any altercations among them. There is no cover up. There is nothing to cover up. I really don't know why I keep commenting to your ignorance and stupidity. You will continue on listening to your source and speculating on what is the truth. You have no idea what someone wanted and what he was trying to do. Continue on with your judgements and ridicule while we heal! We have found peace and blessing with this situation and working through all those involved. Since you were not involved, I do not feel the need to read anymore of your trash talk. I really pray that you never have to deal with such an episode because if you did, you may think differently!

There is no story here, it was a suicide attempt of which are hardly ever reported on, except trashy tabloids that line the aisle of grocery stores and blogs which criticize and condemn without a valid alternative or suggestion.

Reasoning for why they are not mentioned has more to do with mental health and not a crime. As for other citizens inconvienence, it is the same senario of being stuck in traffic for hours behind a wreck. It's an unfortunate situation, one which we can't judge until we have taken a long walk in those shoes. Telling a story doesn't involve intimidating a family member over a personal matter, at least not an ethical story anyway. Sounds more like talk radio banter, but not 102.3....

Maybe he is fortunate that officers worked with and knew him since he had a gun. If John Q Public brandishes a weapon that long, the outcome may have been quite different.

So you are saying that everyone else is wrong and you're right? That's typical. I still know that I'm right. They guy was trying to get someone to kill him, and he tried to intimidate them into doing it. In by doing so, he fired a shot. That is the story. All but the firing of the shot I know to be fact first hand. Well, why don't your "family" give an interview to tell you side of the story? Oh, that's right, privacy. How convenient to help cover up a story.

mpliles5, first of all let me clear up something that apparently you have been misinformed. There was never any open fire in a neighborhood! The subdivision families were not put in danger. Everything you have said is not the truth. Really you haven't said much that had any substance. You have made a lot of assumptions and are trying to piece together something to write about to get a response. I should have never began to respond because it could go back and forth forever. The media wants to assume cover up; the information is not automatically published by the SO; if it is given out, the media made attempts and open record application to get information. We are not going to worry about the assumptions, accusations and personal attacks from this site or any other site. We are moving on and through God's blessings we are fine!

I ask that you cite one thing that is false on La Fayette Underground's site (providing proof of course). Everything I have said is the truth, and as for privacy, the guy should have thought before he opened fire around a neighborhood. I bet all of those people wanted privacy when this suicidal ex-cop maniac could have killed someone with a stray bullet. I don't and never will feel sorry for someone that wants to take their own life, especially ones that put others in harm's way.

I am asking that you guys leave my family alone. There are so many things posted on the The LaFayette Underground that is not the truth. Yeah, some of it may be the truth, but most of it is speculation. This has nothing to do with a cover up. There is privacy when it comes to discussing medical info with someone. The neighborhood was not completely evacuated; many stayed home. It is hard to take someone serious about offering prayer when in the next sentence there is some insult or degrading. Give us the privacy! There are many people impacted by these comments especially those that are not the truth. I am not going to hide behind a screen name because what I am saying is the truth and don't mind admitting it.

@sassyone:

The reason you didn't hear anything about it was because it was "one of their own." Goto "http://www.cityoflafayettega.com/" they have the full story there.

Well, the Walker County Sheriff's Department then, whatever. But a fact is a fact. I don't care what you have to say against it.

mpliles5: I cannot believe you are so cold hearted as to say what you have. I can tell you right now what you said is not the truth and have no idea where you got your facts from. You see I am part of that family of the man who did this. Yeah, I will go elsewhere because I should have never made the first comment because of the ignorance here. When I read the comments, I could not help but try to defend what is being said. We are all hurting and trying to get through this. It is hard to defend ignorance and inhumane behaviors. I will have to refrain from commenting anymore because it is too painful to read such comments. Let me assure you what you have said is not correct! LPD was not involved!

rambler4: Actually, what I said is the truth. I know this for a fact, so go elsewhere to troll the message boards. As for why he wanted to kill himself, I have no idea, but I really don't care about the families of these idiotic people anyway.

You people have no idea!!!!! The comments that are made are so far from the truth! Just realize the things that are said have a huge impact on the lives of the family.

This guy was wanting L.P.D. to kill him. He was trying to entice the cops to shoot him because he was too chicken to do it himself.

I heard about this last night on the Judy O'Neal show but until an hour ago, I didn't hear a peep about this on any of the local media. I wonder why.
