A Fort Oglethorpe police officer was terminated for negligence and incompetency in performing his duties dur-ing an incident involving a 2-month-old April 23.

Gary Brown, who worked with the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department for two years and has been in law en-forcement for six years, appealed the termination to the Fort Oglethorpe City Council at the May 24 meeting, but the council voted to uphold the termination.

The call Brown was investigating was for a baby boy with blood coming from his mouth and having difficulty breathing.

When Brown arrived at the scene, he said the ambulance and family were leaving. He never saw the child or went inside the apartment complex.

Records show he was on the scene for four minutes.

Police chief David Eubanks said Brown failed to complete his duties as the first officer on scene. These duties include writing a report, securing the scene and performing a preliminary investigation.

The officer in charge that night suggested Brown file a report about the incident and go to the apartment com-plex or the hospital, according to the police chief.

Brown said he was never told to write a report for the incident, which was a medical call and something he had never been trained to handle.

Brown was fired by the city manager on recommendation from the police chief.
