The North Georgia Athletic Conference middle school softball tournament gets going today with No. 9 seed Rossville playing at No. 8 Trion, weather-permitting.

Four games will be played on Tuesday. Top-seeded Heritage will host the Rossville/Trion winner. Other games include No. 7 Dade at No. 2 Lakeview, No. 6 Ringgold at No. 3 Chattanooga Valley, and No. 5 LaFayette at No. 4 Gordon Lee.

The semifinals will be played on Thursday, Sept. 30 with the championship finals starting on Friday, Oct. 1 with game one of the best-of-three series at the lowest-remaining seed.

Game two will be played at the highest-remaining seed on Saturday. Oct. 2 with a third game, if necessary, to immediately follow.

Chattanooga Valley is the defending tournament champion.

I can't speak for the CCN. I can only speak for myself, but I will do my best to be there in person, wherever the game ends up being played. What time will the game begin that Saturday morning?

I make no promises, however. I didn't find out about the tournament until Monday, and I have other prior personal appointments on Saturday that were made a few weeks in advance.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the information Mr Herpst. Based on the story above, I believe the news staff has the information of where to be this Saturday morning to watch the championship game plus the NGAC All Region and All Tournament Team selections for the 2010 season. Hopefully this warrants coverage as it did last year.

I don't know for certain, but it's been my experience over the years that very few middle school teams and coaches call or e-mail the papers to let the sports editors know about these accomplishments until after the fact. Both the CCN and the WCM have just one person to cover the entire sports department. Both counties already have three high schools and numerous teams to follow, in addition to all the middle schools. Most of the middle school games are played on the same day as high school games, and one person can't be in five or six places at once. High school sports are always going to take precedent over middle school sports. That's just the way it is. Few papers even publish middle school results and even fewer cover middle school games on a regular basis because of time and personnel restraints.

I have made the suggestion numerous times over the years that each middle school team's coach call in their results after each game, or designate a media relations person to handle it. I have asked this of the middle school teams in Walker County for almost 10 years now, and I rarely get middle school sports information. If teams will just help us out by calling it in or sending it in, we will get the results put in the paper, but it will take people making an effort to let us know what's going on. We are already spread thin enough as it is trying to just cover high school sport, so we need the assistance of the parents and coaches at the middle school to make it all work.

Sincerely,

Scott Herpst

Somehow overlooked that Heritage is the regular season champions with a perfect season (16-0) and the pre-season play day champions (5-0). Heritage outscored its opponents 145 runs to 19 runs. How about the fact that all 3 of their pitchers have an ERA of well below 1.00. Additionally, Hertiage is the 3 time defending regular season champions (2008, 2009 & 2010). Impressive things happening at Heritage Middle and I can't understand why Catoosa News chooses not to highlight these accomplishments.
